Thrane & Thrane will upgrade USAF C-130J with AVIATOR satcom
Thrane & Thrane A/S will be installing its AVIATOR SwiftBroadband satellite communications terminal in the US Air Force C-130J Super Hercules fleet as part of the new Block 8.1 upgrade by Lockheed Martin.
Lockheed Martin will be paying Thrane & Thrane an amount expected to exceed DKK 150 million to upgrade over 200 Hercules aircraft over a four-year roll-out period stretching from 2014 to 2018.
Thrane & Thrane’s AVIATOR 700D airborne satellite communications terminal will support the air traffic management data link component of the Block 8.1 upgrade. It is DO178B certified, prepared for FANS1/A operation, and supports a combination of current Inmarsat cockpit safety provisions as well as SwiftBroadband IP data and voice capability.
The C-130J Hercules is a heavy-lift tactical cargo and personnel transport aircraft. It can carry a 20-ton payload or nearly a hundred passengers. Operators include Australia, Canada, Denmark, Italy, UK, Norway, the UK, and the USA. All of these countries will benefit from the Block 8.1 upgrade program, which will allow C-130Js operated by different nations to communicate during joint operations.
